THE GREAT NEED

FOR THE OVER-THE-ROAD DRIVER

The trucking and transportation industry provides millions of people in the United States an great source of income each year. According to Driver Solutions, truck driving is the most common job in 29 states. Even so, the trucking and transportation industry remains somewhat overlooked as a viable career.

The local and over-the-road trucking industry contributes an enormous amount of money to the economy. The combination of common carriers and private truck fleets can account for over $175 billion in annual revenue. To meet the freight demand that generates these revenues, the hiring needs of many large trucking companies is substantial. The more drivers are company hires, the more freight they can haul, and there is a huge amount of cargo to be transported. A common expression that is used when discussing trucking goes, “if you got it, a truck brought it.” If the trucks stop, our economy does too.

As a result, industry statistical reports show what a huge demand for drivers there is, and why being a professional truck driver is such a great occupation. The American Trucking Associations reports that through the year 2025, an estimated 890,000 CDL drivers will need to be hired. This means over 88,000 CDL drivers per year will be needed as the industry grows and experienced drivers retire. ATA studies show that right now there is an estimated shortage of over 100,000 CDL drivers, and this number may increase to over 175,000 by 2024.

TRAINING

OUR CLASS-A CDL PROGRAM

Our truck driving school offers a comprehensive curriculum that provides each student with the knowledge and practical skills necessary to become an entry-level over-the-road truck driver. The program consists of 160 hours of Class-A CDL training and instruction.

Our program is kept to a class of four students. Keeping classes small allows us to offer better one-on-one time and communication. The program includes classroom instruction, hands-on labs, independent study, and online visual and auditory training. We provide a minimum of 44 hours of truck driver training that takes place behind-the-wheel on a practice range and public roads, and classes are conducted over 4-5 weeks of training. This meets the needs of students with no prior knowledge or experience in truck driving interested in getting a Class-A CDL license and a truck driving job.

To prepare students for their permit, we have prepared study guides and practice tests to assist learning and preparation.

Salt Lake Driving Academy is an approved FedEx CDL training provider. In meeting their high driver standards, our program is built to help you achieve their expectations. Additionally, we work closely with the Utah Department of Workforce services.

You will gain the essential knowledge and practical skills necessary to be qualified as an entry-level, supervised over-the-road truck driver.

WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN A “CLASS A” AND A “CDL?”

A Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) shows carriers and employers that you are a licensed and competent Professional Truck Driver. In order to operate certain commercial motor vehicles, it is necessary to learn and know specialized skills and knowledge.

A Class A CDL License allows an individual to operate any combination of vehicles weighing 26,001 or more pounds provided the vehicle(s) being towed is in excess of 10,000 pounds. You also need this license to drive across state lines. A Class B CDL License allows you to operate any single vehicle weighing 26,001 or more pounds towing a vehicle and not in excess of 10,000 pounds while driving only in the state in which it was issued. Typically, a Class B applies to operation as a Courier Driver, Dump Truck Driver, or Bus Driver.
